چکیده

Acid-base interactions have found numerous applications in research dealing with adsorption of molecules of liquids on the surfaces of solids. The main focus of this research is to estimate the thermodynamic work of adhesion, determine mechanism of interactions, analyze the morphology of interfaces and various surface coatings, develop surface modifiers, study the aggregation of macromolecular materials, explain the kinetics of swelling and drying, understand the absorption of low molecular weight compounds in polymeric matrices, and determine the properties of solid surfaces. In addition to these, there are many other applications. Several techniques are used to determine and interpret acid-base interactions. These include: contact angle, inverse gas chromatography, IGC, Fourier transform infrared, FTIR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, XPS. These methods, as they are applied to solvents are discussed below. Contact angle measurements have long been used because of common availability of instruments. In recent years, they have been developed from simple optical devices to the present day precise, sophisticated, computer-controlled instruments with sufficient precision. Van Oss and Good developed the basic theory for this method. Their expression for surface free energy is used in the following form:

Determination of the acid dissociation constants of the p-sulphonato-calix[4]arene

The acid dissociation constants of the hydroxyl groups in 25, 26, 27, 28-tetrahydroxy-5, 11, 17, 23-tetrasulphonic-calix[4]arene (SC4) were determined at 25οC by a combination of potentiometric and spectrophotometric titration method. The first and second acid dissociation constants (pKa1, pKa2) were found to be 3.19 and 12.1, which demonstrated pKa shift due to intramolecular hydrogen bonding ...

Amino acid?base interactions: a three-dimensional analysis of protein?DNA interactions at an atomic level

To assess whether there are universal rules that govern amino acid-base recognition, we investigate hydrogen bonds, van der Waals contacts and water-mediated bonds in 129 protein-DNA complex structures. DNA-backbone interactions are the most numerous, providing stability rather than specificity. For base interactions, there are significant base-amino acid type correlations, which can be rationa...

Recognition of nucleic acid bases and base-pairs by hydrogen bonding to amino acid side-chains.

Sequence-specific protein-nucleic acid recognition is determined, in part, by hydrogen bonding interactions between amino acid side-chains and nucleotide bases. To examine the repertoire of possible interactions, we have calculated geometrically plausible arrangements in which amino acids hydrogen bond to unpaired bases, such as those found in RNA bulges and loops, or to the 53 possible RNA bas...

Nature of Lithium Interactions with DNA Nucleobases: Theoretical Study

In the present study, the interactions of three different lithium species Li+, Li3+ and CH3Li with several different sites of the most stable tautomers of DNA nucleo-bases are presented. This investigation is based on the results of thermochemical properties, Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) and Natural Bond Orbi...

Ab initio interaction energies of hydrogen-bonded amino acid side chain[bond]nucleic acid base interactions.

Hydrogen-bonding interactions often make substantial contributions to the specificity of protein-nucleic acid complexes. Using a geometric modeling approach, we previously identified 28 possible doubly hydrogen-bonded interactions to the four unpaired RNA bases. Here we present interaction energies of these models, calculated by ab initio quantum chemical methods, and describe a correlation bet...
